Captain Phil Harris died Tuesday night in an Anchorage hospital. He was 53.
The star of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch had been showing signs of improvement after suffering a stroke while unloading crabs from his vessel several weeks ago. He had been joking with doctors and nurses after waking up from surgery last week.
His sons, Jake and Josh Harris, who both worked with him on the Cornelia, released a statement Tuesday:
“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad – Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”
