TV Throwdown: Lauren Conrad Vs. Audrina Patridge
Maisy Fernandez December 22, 2010

It’s been quite a year for The Hills alum Audrina Patridge. After The Hills got worn down to nubs and was eventually cancelled, the reality star was cast on the hottest reality competition going, Dancing With the Stars, where she impressed judges and viewers alike.
From there, it was announced that she’d earned her own reality show on VH1 — a project with super-reality-producer Mark Burnett (Survivor) — which is supposed to start filming in early 2011.
And now ex-Hills star, Lauren Conrad has started coming out of the woodwork to promote her book and new reality show, which will focus on her job as she tries to cultivate a career in fashion.
For longtime viewers of The Hills, it’s kind of crazy to imagine Conrad or Patridge having solo shows. After all, the two (and their other Hills co-stars) could barely even cobble out an entire conversation between them when they were all together. How will either of these women carry an entire half-hour alone?
That remains to be seen. But we’re ready to predict whose show will be better right now, in an ex-BFF TV Throwdown.
PERSONALITY
Let’s be frank: Neither of these lovelies have the most sparkling personalities. They’re both nice girls and all, but they aren’t particularly witty or clever, and some days, not even that interesting. It’s clear that their celebrity — not their contagious personalities — earned them their own shows. So considering that, we think Lauren has a slight edge here, mostly because she’s more capable of having a conversation instead of staring off into space. She might be twirling her hair the entire time, but at least her mouth will moving. It has to, or she’ll never get any work done.

FRESHNESS
We see Lauren’s name and face on her clothing displays at Kohl’s. But since she left The Hills, LC has been laying low, except for her Twitter, which is like digital Sominex.
Meantime, Audrina was still on The Hills during its last season, and was also cast on Dancing With the Stars. What’s more, she wound up being a fantastic dancer. Most think she was prematurely booted from the show, which got her more attention than cast-offs usually get. Following her dismissal from the show, her mom’s drunken rant added some extra time to her newsworthiness.
Audrina has been visible more recently, so she takes this round.

NETWORK
Between The Real World, The Hills and Jersey Shore, MTV is more synonymous with successful reality TV programming than it is for music, for which its capital M stands. LC is heading back to the mother ship, where her celebrity was born and where her past viewers already are. However, many of those viewers lost interest in The Hills, now favoring the crass debauchery of Jersey Shore came along, so that could hurt her.
Audrina is jumping ship to VH1, whose reality shows are generally a bit more trashy (Celebrity Rehab, Rock of Love, to name a few) than MTV’s. (Note: Trashy = interesting.) VH1 touts its “Celebreality,” and rarely disappoints. Audrina’s fans will have to bail to a new channel, but that’s what a remote control is for. Because she’s getting a fresh start on a new network, we think she’s got the edge.

STAR POWER
Lauren was discovered by MTV producers who made her the star of Laguna Beach, and her sweet disposition earned her a spinoff series, The Hills. While Audrina was technically one of four leads on The Hills, it’s hard to say she was even a main focal point of the show, what with her lackluster personality and monotonous on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bobby.
Now Lauren’s on Big Show #3, while Audrina is preparing for her first starring role — it’s uncharted territory. Lauren has the numbers, experience and history behind her to win this round.

SUPPORTING CAST
We’re not really sure who will join Lauren on her new show, but since viewers reportedly won’t see any of her personal life, we can’t imagine it will be a thrill a minute, no matter who they find to befriend her.
On the flip side, Audrina’s friends and mother are supposed to be a part of her program, which will focus on her personal life. Mama Patridge doesn’t seem to be a stranger to tipping the bottle and dropping the f-bomb. It’s also possible that some of her old Hills pals could pop up here and there, since they’re not bound to MTV anymore. Need we say more?
It’s Audrina for the win!

Bottom line: While we think Lauren’s a sweet girl, her show seems like a rip-off of Whitney Port’s The City, but minus the juiciness of her dating life. We’ve already seen Lauren dealing with bitchy fashion industry types in The Hills, and we suspect this could feel like deja vu.
Audrina’s offering probably won’t break any new ground, either, but between the network change, and the involvement of Mark Burnett and her swearing mother, she’s got the fundamentals for success. With any luck, it will last longer than her stay on DWTS.
