Toxic TV Hook-Ups of 2009
Maisy Fernandez December 16, 2009

Nobody’s perfect, least of all our favorite TV characters. That’s what makes them so fun to watch!
This year has been filled with some great TV personas entering some not-so-wise relationships. It makes for wonderful viewing, but in the long run, you kinda hate to see your faves be so miserable, too.
Luckily, each year’s end brings with it the hope of renewal and closure, so perhaps some of these folks can move on to something that works better for them in 2010.
Here are some of the most toxic TV hook-ups of 2009:

Jason Stackhouse and Sarah Newlin, True Blood
Distraught over the death of his girlfriend, Amy, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) sought solace in the anti-vampire religious organization, Fellowship of the Sun. To be fair, Jason isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But when he got involved with the married church co-leader Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), he became a pariah in the church as well. On top of everything else, he definitely doesn’t need a cult on his ass, too.

Dexter Morgan and Arthur Miller, Dexter
This wasn’t a hook-up hook-up, but when everyone’s favorite serial killer got involved with another murderer, Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow), it has disastrous results. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) became so obsessed with hunting and killing Arthur, he lost sight of the potential consequences, forgetting what was most important to him. In the end, Dexter would have been so much better off letting his co-workers find, and arrest, Arthur themselves.

Nancy Botwin and Esteban Reyes, Weeds
Just when you think Nancy’s (Mary-Louise Parker) taste in hook-ups can’t get any worse (Guillermo? Peter? Sullivan?), she married the biggest danger of them all: Esteban Reyes (Demian Bichir).
The mayor of Tijuana and a drug kingpin, Esteban is loving and wealthy but can be emotionally abusive and chauvinistic as well. Her relationship with him puts her children in danger (Shane was shot in the arm last season!). And on top of that, there’s now a new baby in the mix, fathered by Esteban.

Cheryl Burke and Tom DeLay, Dancing With the Stars
To be fair, Cheryl probably didn’t get much choice in the matter of her dance partner for the show’s most recent season. But it had to be difficult for the hard-core, ball-busting coach — whose partners almost always graduate to the final rounds — to be saddled with such a lame duck dancer. Even if he hadn’t been injured, they didn’t stand a chance. Cheryl put on a smile, but we’re sure she drank heavily at home each night to cope.

Eric Murphy and Ashley, Entourage
Eric (Kevin Connolly) didn’t realize what he was getting himself into when he started seeing 24-year-old Ashley. Clingy and insecure, Ashley was a bit of an undercover psycho with severe trust issues. Lucky for him, she couldn’t keep her crazy under wraps for very long and he was able to nip the relationship in the bud.

Jackie Peyton and Eddie, Nurse Jackie
To be honest, Jackie’s (Edie Falco) most toxic relationship is the one she has with drugs. But that wouldn’t flourish like it does if it weren’t for Eddie, a co-worker with whom she has an affair to get various pills. Problem is, Jackie is happily married with two kids and at the end of the season, it appeared she was about to get found out.

Jason Mesnick and Melissa Rycroft, The Bachelor
After he was dumped by DeAnna Pappas on The Bachelorette, everyone was rooting for single dad Jason Mesnick to find his true love when he was cast on The Bachelor.
But my, how the tables turned when Jason humiliated his winner Melissa by dumping her on national TV — all so that he could pursue runner-up Molly Malaney.

Will and Terri Schuester, Glee
One of the most incompatible couples on television, something here needs to give. Selfish Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) doesn’t have any respect or compassion for Will (Matthew Morrison) and his passion for teaching. Faking a pregnancy that her husband was so excited about was both cruel and misguided. Will needs to dump her, spend some time alone, and perhaps explore his chemistry with guidance counselor, Emma (Jayma Mays).

Christian Troy and Liz Cruz, Nip/Tuck
Honestly, any relationship that involves Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) is going to be toxic. After he was diagnosed with cancer, he had sex with and then got together with his previously-lesbian co-worker Liz Cruz (Roma Maffia). She fell in love with and married him, agreeing to care for him until his death and then adopt his child, Wilbur. But when Christian — the only man Liz had ever been with — found out he’d been misdiagnosed, he promptly dumped her and resumed his womanizing ways.
