Susan writes a column on being single for the hip San Francisco magazine, "The Gate," which is run by Jack, the brother of her ex-fiance. Also working at the magazine are Vicki, the witty restaurant critic; Luis, the suave photographer; Todd, the magazine's music critic; and Maddy, an investigative reporter who is Susan's adversary. Susan takes comfort in her close relationship with her Nana.
