Susan, a beautiful but somewhat sheltered magazine writer, leaves her fiance when she realizes she wants more from life. Unlike her parents, Susan's "Nana" totally supports her decision and helps ease the adjustment to her new lifestyle. At the hip San Francisco magazine, "The Gate," Susan struggles with her new promotion from copy editor to writer of her own column on being single. Her boss Jack, the brother of her ex-fiance, decided she earned the promotion after realizing that now that she was alone, confused and struggling to make ends meet, she was suddenly interesting to readers. Also working at the magazine are Vicki, Susan's witty co-worker who introduces her to the single world; Luis, the suave photographer who has his eye on Susan; and Todd, the magazine's music critic.
