Summer doesn't have to be all cops and reality.

Original series in the summer have become associated with character-based dramas like Rescue Me and The Closer. Sitcoms are an even more endangered species in summer than they have become on the September-May prime time schedule. One of the exceptions is My Boys, which presents as its lead character one of the most common male fantasy types: a gorgeous woman who can carry on a guy conversation and likes guy things. Although the writing isn't quite as sharp, the show has a lot of the same appeal as How I Met Your Mother -- not bad for a series that debuted last year to virtually no publicity.

Tonight (TBS, 9:30 p.m.), PJ has to consider how she feels about the attentions of Bobby's brother, who has the proverbial bad reputation. Preparations continue for Bobby's wedding, and on the already-married front, Andy attends counseling with his wife. My Boys sometimes threatens to become a romantic comedy, an unavoidable concern anytime you have unmarried people of the opposite sex hanging out, but for the time being it's about the funniest thing on the summertime tube this side of I Love Money.

Greatest American Dog (CBS, 8 p.m.): The infighting between the humans gets more fierce this week, as we knew that it would. But as we saw last time, it's not all love and friendly sniffing between the dogs either, and Elvis has to work to restore his reputation after his little incident. It's tough to live down a bad reputation. Get used to the doghouse, Elvis.

Last Comic Standing (NBC, 8 p.m.): The auditions seemed to take forever, but things are now moving at warp speed as this show moves towards a pre-Olympics wrapup. Tonight, the final eight head to the Playboy mansion, where their task is to tell a funny bedtime story to the three Girls Next Door girls. Note to all producers: the Playboy mansion is a sign of creative fatigue. It hasn't been hip since before any of those girls were born.

Extreme Living (HGTV, 9:30 p.m.): It's that time of year when those of us who live in tornado-prone parts of the country get to look down our noses at those in the hurricane-prone parts. An architect in the Tampa area has built a home in hurricane alley that can withstand 135 mile an hour winds. Let's hope this claim never has to be tested. Also, a Laguna Beach man builds a home on a slope with a 90-foot drop. When he rolls out of bed in the morning, he just keeps rolling.

Burn Notice (USA, 10 p.m.): Michael's effort to help a client takes him down the road of pretending to be a clueless victim for a con artist, before he gets to con the conner himself. I don't know how a professional con man would be fooled by Michael, who just comes across as naturally smart.

Fear Itself (NBC, 10 p.m.): I'm still not sure if last week's zombie episode was brilliant or an utter mess. Tonight, Mary Harron (American Psycho) directs the story of a sweet young couple who move to a suburb where the usual pressure to conform has a little more muscle behind it than you typically find. Brandon Routh and Shiri Appleby play the young marrieds.

Flashpoint (CBS, 10 p.m.): Don't tune in to CBS tonight and find yourself asking at 10:02 "Hey! Where's the naked people?" Swingtown has swapped nights with this series, no doubt a precursor to its cancellation. Tonight, an undercover operation to bring down a drug dealer is put in jeopardy when an unexpected visitor makes an appearance. It won't be the same without pornstaches and Andrea True singing "More, More, More."

Hopkins (ABC, 10 p.m.): A dentist turned plastic surgeon works to restore the face of a boy disfigured by earlier surgery; parents have to decide if a brain operation for their son is worth the risk; third year med students approach their work eagerly, but their presence is less appreciated by patients who thought they were seeing full-fledged doctors. I have some sympathy for the patients here. I want to know that the doctor looking at my body has seen even worse before, and a med student might not have enough experience for that.

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (Bravo, 10 p.m.): It's usually all snark in Kathy's world, but things take a more serious turn tonight as she tries to persuade her heartsick mother that it's time to move into a retirement home. In more pleasant news, Kathy and entourage head to Bora Bora for a pair of concerts and general gettin' down with her fans.

Reality Bites Back (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): If you weren't cracking up last week when the comedians tried to talk their own parents (hidden in shadow) into sleeping with them, your sense of humor is amiss. Tonight, it's a Rock of Love parody as the contestants have to prove their love to comedian Luenell Campbell.
