What2Watch: Barbara Walters, On The Other Side Of The Interview

ABC's 'Barbara Walters Lifelong 'Audition': Walters rubs noses with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala in 2005
ABC

Tonight at 10:00 on ABC, instead of watching Boston Legal trying to pass off 77-year-old William Shatner as an insatiable stud, you can tune in to see Barbara Walters discussing her own sex life. I suppose it could be worse: Andy Rooney could write his own tell-all memoir.

To be fair, I'm certain there's more to Walters's recently released autobiography than just talk of her romances, although revelation of her past affair with a U.S. senator has gotten all the attention in the last week, as she surely knew it would; Walters knows how the game is played by now. ABC, her employer for over 30 years, is giving her a one-hour special to promote the book tonight, Audition: Barbara Walters' Journey, an interview conducted by Charlie Gibson. Few careers in television journalism have been more significant or covered more ground, even if Walters has been on the celebrity beat for most of that time, so we can hope she has some insight and perspective to impart. Maybe Gibson will even pull out the prototypical Barbara question and ask her what tree she sees herself as.

America's Next Top Model (CW, 8 PM): The final four work with their usual judges this week: they photograph Paulina Porizkova, and later pose as movie icons in a shoot with Nigel Barker.

Secrets of the Dead (PBS, 8 PM): A look at the East German doping program for athletes which had its heyday in the 1970s, and led to dramatic physical and hormonal changes in girls who had no idea what was happening to them.

'Til Death (Fox, 8 PM): Eddie and Jeff decide to make demands of their wives after seeing how the new bride of one of their colleagues indulges him.

Under One Roof (MNTV, 8 PM): Winston Jr. decides gangsta rap is where the money is. Is this 1995?

Wife Swap (ABC, 8 PM): A wife who keeps an immaculate house and insists on rules swaps into a family where the dad is a bounty hunter and the kids have no limits whatsoever.

Back to You (Fox, 8:30 PM): A new station manager creates havoc in the newsroom, and veterans Chuck and Kelly have the task of confronting her.

American Idol (Fox, 9 PM): Bo Bice, runner-up on the show three seasons back, returns to perform tonight along with Maroon 5. I incorrectly predicted Jason Castro would leave last week, but it's hard to see how he can possibly avoid it this time after the strangest flameout this late in a season in Idol history. This show gave the world Carrie Underwood -- reggae songs about killing sheriffs are a poor fit.

American Masters (PBS, 9 PM): If you need a palate cleanser after watching the Idol group sing, switch over here and catch Marvin Gaye: What's Going On, a look at the career of one of Motown's most original and tortured performers. Future Gaye portrayer Jesse L. Martin narrates.

Children of the Grave (SciFi, 9 PM): A two-hour documentary which focuses on cases of paranormal kids, complete with reenactments.

Criminal Minds (CBS, 9 PM): Rossi and Hotchner attempt to ascertain if a husband killer can plausibly claim battered woman syndrome as a defense; the rest of the BAU looks for a stalker.

Farmer Wants a Wife (CW, 9 PM): Matt is let in on some gossip; the women learn about a local pastime, bingo; the eliminated woman refuses to go. It can't be Josie's time just yet, can it?

Supernanny (ABC, 9 PM): Jo tries to help a mother of three who has a husband away in Iraq as a civilian contractor, and kids who are getting hard to control.

Design on a Dime (HGTV, 9:30 PM): A tattoo artist wants her interest in Mexico's "Day of the Dead" folklore reflected in her bedroom. This could become an issue if you ever have any ambitions of inviting another person into said room.

Cash and Treasures (Travel, 10 PM and 10:30 PM): A pair of episodes set in Brazil, as Kirsten goes hunting for aquamarine and a mineral called morganite.

CSI: NY (CBS, 10 PM): The team makes a concerted effort to get the Taxicab Killer after another victim is found.

Law & Order (NBC, 10 PM): A legal aid worker is killed while on strike; and because of the strike, Rubirosa is forced to serve as the eventual defendant's lawyer.

The Big 4-0 (TV Land, 10 PM): The friends of a woman who has mostly checked out of any social life for years following the sudden death of her fiancé plan an 18th century-themed birthday party for her.

The Real World (MTV, 10 PM): Real life intervenes in the Real World: the roommates hold an intervention for Joey, and Brianna returns to Philadelphia to face domestic abuse charges.

Top Chef (Bravo, 10 PM): Tonight's episode runs for 75 minutes, so make extra popcorn. The remaining chefs, including new favorite Antonia, head out to cater a wedding, which is definitely not the assignment to screw up.

UFO Hunters (History, 10 PM): The hunters check out former employees of NASA to see what they've learned about potential UFO activity.

DEA (Spike, 11 PM): Thermal imaging technology assists the agents in the never-ending battle against marijuana grow houses.
