Survivor: The Couples Edition?Last night was a very special Valentine's episode of Survivor, complete with "the sounds of jungle love."

Before I get into this week's episode, I just want to say how glad I am that CBS and ABC have put Survivor and Lost back-to-back on Thursday nights. This is a wonderful gift to a person who enjoys themes as much as I do, allowing me to excitedly announce to my coworkers that it is "Deserted Island Thursday!" My friends know it is only a matter of time before they get an Evite for a themed viewing party, complete with pina coladas and a costume contest. The Favorites arrived back at camp with a fish Ozzie caught with his bare hands. Jonathan announced that they would win if they kept doing things the way they have been. He does know they lost the last Immunity Challenge, right? As if it wasn't obvious enough last week, we got to see more of Ozzie and Amanda, and James and Parvati flirting with each other, over footage of our two couples snuggling and, um...etc. Cirie interviewed that she expects an announcement from Amanda about the birth of her "little Ozzlets." She also said that the foursome is strategically scary, and she's right. Rob and Amber dominated All-Stars with their romantic alliance. She discussed this with Jonathan, and they made a pact to join forces against the Lovebird Alliance. We didn't get to see many of the Fans last week. Kathy, Tracy, and Chet were being shunned by the younger members of the tribe to the point where both factions were building separate shelters, but a bit of food helped smooth things over. In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Jeff Probst said that he wasn't sure why Kathy was picked and didn't think she belonged on the show. At the time, I thought that was pretty harsh. Now that I've seen her in action, I totally agree with him; hearing her say tearfully that being left out of the tribe brought back memories of not fitting in high school, I thought, "No wonder!" instead of feeling sorry for her. Not to be outdone by the Favorites in the hook-up department, Mikey and Mary have also struck up a flirtation, complete with him grooming her like a gorilla by picking bugs out of her hair. The Reward/Immunity challenge combined swimming and puzzle assembly. Ozzie dominated in the swimming portion. Chet couldn't find his key, causing Joel to lose his patience, but then he also kind of dilly-dallied getting out of the water, which would have made me mad too, if I were on his team. The favorites won and got the Immunity Idol, which looks a bit like a wood carving of C-3PO being attacked by a giant squid.
The Favorites opted to send Kathy to Exile Island, and then Jeff announced that they would also have to send a member of their own tribe. Cirie ended up going. Well, that's good for the viewing audience. I can't wait to hear what she has to say about Kathy; it's bound to be entertaining. The women worked together to find the Immunity Idol, which involved a lot of swimming around from clue to clue. At the Fans' camp, the scramble to stay began. Erik's voice even cracked a little bit at the prospect of going to Tribal Council. Although it looked like Chet would go, Mikey cooked up an elaborate voting scheme to split the big alliance's vote between Chet and Tracy, in case Kathy found the hidden Immunity Idol, but Joel didn't like Mikey pulling all the strings, especially considering the danger posed by his closeness with Mary. He proposed that they pull Mary out from under Mikey. (No double entendre intended, honest!) Chet, in a sleeveless pink blouse that looks like it came from Talbot's resort-wear collection, defended his performance at the challenge. Well, kind of: He said, "It was what it was." Jeff grilled the tribe about the two shelters, and everybody basically owned up to the conflict. On to voting: Chet, Chet, Tracy, Mary, Mary, Tracy, Mary, Mary, Mary. Wow, I don't really like Joel, but that was a pretty smart move. I always like it when someone who says they think they're safe is voted out. It is going to cause a lot of friction in the tribe, too. Next week: Cirie is the swing vote on the Favorites tribe. Will she pick the couples or stick with Jonathan, Yau-Man, Eliza, and Ami? * * * Amy Kane spends as much quality time with her television as possible, when she's not busy at her day job as a cube dweller.
