Project Runway Crowns a New Designer!

Christian is the winner of Bravo's 'Project Runway' Season 4

Thank God for the invention of the DVR. I really would’ve hated to miss last night’s season finale of Project Runway because of the screening of Stop-Loss I had to attend. The judges, including special guest Victoria Beckham, hit a New York Fashion Week show of their final three designers’ collections and, in the end, did what we all knew they’d do -- chose a winner, and sent the other two spiraling back into their previous obscurity.

The best parts of the episode came at the beginning and the end. Christian -- who has portrayed himself as the cockiest, most self-assured designer, artist and human being since the season began -- actually started to melt down. At the sight of Rami and Jillian’s outfits, he panicked and confided to us, via the producers’ cameras, that he was second-guessing his work. He remained like this until he stepped before the judges at the end -- my other favorite moment of the evening. When asked to talk about his work, the 21 year old’s chin looked ready to shake itself off his face; tears were ready to be shed at a moment’s notice.

Rami, by contrast, was cool, collected, and confident. His colorful, very wearable designs -- many of which looked like something Katharine Hepburn would have worn -- would ultimately sway the judges to give him the $100,000 prize. Compared to Christian’s black and cream designs, most of which looked like avant-garde explosions of ruffles and feathers, his pieces looked like model-shaped crayons. But it was Jillian (whom my girlfriend has long championed for her innovative, always wearable designs) who disappointed me the most out of the triumvirate. Her looks were disjointed; one was almost an exact copy of something I saw Wonder Woman wear while visiting the island paradise of Themyscira, and several of the others sported dramatic equestrian riding helmets that might have been stolen from the costume department of the awesomely bad Flash Gordon movie (which somebody seriously needs to remake with My Chemical Romance doing the soundtrack this time around instead of Queen -- God save Freddie!).

The fashion show went well, but, as always, was rather anti-climactic compared to the drama behind the scenes. The judges were smitten with all of the collections, too, which surprised me; even Jillian got a lot of effusive praise, especially for her knitted looks. In fact, the praise was so effusive, my girlfriend and I were utterly lost when it came time to guess who would actually win the big prize. My money was on Jillian going home to Themyscira first, or at least New Jersey, and I got my wish. That left Rami, whom the judges had faulted for his consistently bad taste in colors, and Christian, whom the judges thought was too heavy-handed and repetitive in much of his work.

This is where it got good, like I said. Christian was shaking apart, which, okay, I admit it, made it all the more fun when Heidi announced he was the winner. The cocky little bitch practically fell over in tears, as Rami quickly hugged him. One minute later, Christian Siriano -- whose name actually sounds like a famous designer -- had recovered and was bragging again, God love him. As Heidi said, he’s "uber-fierce."
