Medium Is Better Than Ever This Season
NBC
Hey! A cliffhanger on Medium? Well, at least we won't have to wait six months to find out what happens. Last night's episode was supposed to have been the last one we were going to get. When the new season's schedule was announced in January, there were only nine episodes ready to go because the writers' strike had interrupted production. I guess they got their butts in gear because now new episodes are coming through mid-April. That's three more episodes. After that, we may have to wait again. But I'm willing. I love this show, and it just keeps getting better. Last night's episode, "Wicked Game Part 1," was particularly good, maybe the best episode so far in a season that may be the best so far, too. This was practically a Joe episode, and good for him: poor Joe always gets the short end of the stick it seems. And I adore Jake Weber, so it was nice to see him have something fun and meaty to dig into: the scene at the unemployment office was hilarious, but that was nothing compared to his dreams -- Yeah! We finally see Joe's dreams! -- inspiring him to invent something that could make the DuBoises rich. If he can get Allison on board with his plan to raid the girls' college money to fund his venture, that is. Yikes. I can understand Allison's reluctance ... but I also get Joe's point, too, that it's time for her to put a little faith in him. One of the best things about this show: Joe and Allison (Patricia Arquette) squabble about little things and argue about big things, but you never sense that their relationship is ever really in trouble. Even when he storms out of the house like he did last night. I've been loving Anjelica Huston's Cynthia Keener all season long, too. And Joe's right about her: what we learned about her past in last night's episode suddenly makes her less-than-pleasant demeanor understandable. The writing on this show, not just within the individual episodes, but across the arc of a season, is really rich. And clever. The episode when Allison lost her hearing? Brilliant. Bridgette's dream about the call-center guy in India? Wonderful. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Comments
