This is where they're gonna leave us, with more than a month to go till we get any relief in the form of answers... or, more likely, tons more new questions but very few answers? Argh!

I have to confess, though, that while Lost may make me want to throw stuff at the television on a regular basis -- and perhaps more so with last night's episode than most before -- it's a good kind of frustration that prompts that urge. I can't remember any other TV show that has kept me guessing for so long -- maybe only Battlestar Galactica even comes close. With so much on TV trite and predictable, that's a good thing.

But still... argh!

Okay, so Michael wants to die, and the island won't let him, even when he's off the island? (I would suggest if wants to die in car crash, it might be better to try a Pinto or a Kia or something small and plastic and explosive, rather than a 70s-era tank -- an iceberg couldn't sink one of those). How far does the island's influence extend, anyway? All the way around the planet to New York? And if Widmore wants to kill everyone on the island so he can keep its secrets for himself, does this mean he won't be able to kill anyone the island "wants" alive? Or maybe the island wants Widmore to kill everyone... which would be weird, but no more weird than anything else that's been going on.

Also, I think I need some explanations of how Widmore was able to arrange to fake the crash of a jumbo jet beyond "he's a powerful rich guy." And why is half the name of Widmore's freighter scratched out or painted over?

Why does Dharma have a "temple" on the island? What's Ben's connection to the Dharma Project and the Hanso Foundation? Is he or was he working with them? Poor Desmond down in his hatch didn't seem to have anything to do with Ben and the Others -- was Ben even aware of Desmond's presence? If not, it suggests that there are at least three different groups with an interest in the island: Ben and the Others, the Dharma/Hanso people, and Widmore. Right? Or am I missing something? I need a scorecard to keep all this stuff straight.

Ben couldn't really be a "good guy," could he? That fake bomb? That was cruel, kinda, to Michael, though I guess if the island wants him alive even a real bomb wouldn't have gone off. Ben's gotta just be a complete pyschopath... that must be it. When Ben talks about Widmore as "a killer without conscience or a greater purpose," Ben is really just saying that he, Ben, is merely a killer with a "higher purpose," right?

Then again: have we actually seen Ben kill anyone?

Lost returns on April 24 at 10pm (ET) with the first of five new episodes. Maybe it's good to get a break for a bit...
