Gossip Girl: So Is Blair Evil or What?
The CW
So Is Blair evil or what? I can't decide, and neither can the show, it seems. Just last week, she softened toward outcast Dan Humphrey, after the two bonded over tales of parental dilemmas. But this week, she was back to her old evil self, inviting Jenny Humphrey to her slumber party for the sake of putting her through a grueling initiation ritual. Young Jenny passed with flying colors, showing a preternatural knack for stealing and lying, and even Blair seems willing to admit she may have met her match. It's such a pet peeve of mine when characters on shows like this inexplicably go from evil to nice to evil again, depending on what the writers think will make the best storyline. And actress Leighton Meester's version of the conniving Upper East Side high school bitch seems forced; if you want to see this role played right, check out Sarah Michelle Gellar's turn as Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions. Perhaps Meester -- and her writers -- will grow into the part over time. Meanwhile, Dan and Serena embark on another date-turned-sibling-rescue, as Jenny and Blair have sprung Serena's suicidal brother from the looney bin, and they finally end the night with a kiss. Is it just me or do these two have zero chemistry? Like, Dan is a very likable character, and so is Serena, but together they just fall flat. I don't think it's the fault of either actor; the spark just isn't there. The kiss was pretty hot, though. I'd totally make out with Penn Badgley, the guy who plays Dan. (Seriously? Who is naming these kids? The primary actors in this show are named Blake, Leighton, Penn and Chace. It's like they all changed their names to fit the part immediately before the audition.) My future boyfriend (although I've temporarily lent him to Carrie Underwood), Chace Crawford, was suspiciously absent from this episode. In fact, neither Nate Archibald nor Chuck Bass had a second of screen time this week. I wonder what's up with that. Half the reason I watch this show is for hottie Nate. There was also a bunch of stuff that happened between Dan's dad and Serena's mom -- who are totally going to end up hooking up, by the way -- but the parent stuff is so boring, so I'm not going to go through it in any detail. It was boring on The O.C. and it's boring here. Focus on the young and beautiful people, please! Tune in next week to find out what happens with the increasingly evil young Jenny, now that crazy brother Eric's back home to stay! I see some manner of incredibly unhealthy relationship in their future. The Evil Beet Celebrity gossip with an evil twist.
