Gossip Girl: It's Almost Enough To Make You Never Want to Summer in Newport Again

How great was Gossip Girl this week? The show took on a Shakespearean flair with this comedy of errors episode. Goodbye, OC! Hello, Gossip Girl!

Here's the scene: Blair is hosting a masquerade ball, and she's set up a "scavenger hunt" for Nate to find her. (I always love the masquerade-ball implication that people are unrecognizable with 1/3 of their face covered.) If he finds her before midnight, she'll finally give it up to him. Look, people, I lost my virginity in the back seat of a car, but, in fairness, at least we were being adult about it. A scavenger hunt? What if he wins at hopscotch instead? Sheesh, Blair.

Over in Brooklyn, Dan's ex-girlfriend, Vanessa, has returned from exile in Vermont. She's a very pretty girl who seems like a sweetheart, but obviously Dan's heart has moved on. Unfortunately, Serena and Blair call to invite him to the masquerade ball while Vanessa's over. Serena hears her voice and asks who it is. Dan tells her it's Jenny, just as Jenny -- who's been tirelessly helping Blair prepare for the party -- walks into Blair's bedroom. Serena hangs up without delivering the invite.

And back in Manhattan, sex is the last thing on Nate's mind, as he's discovered a bag of cocaine -- not his -- in his father's house, which explains his dad's recent financial skittishness. He wants to talk this over with Blair, but she's not answering her phone. This scene wins the award for the first time I've heard the term "yayo" used to describe cocaine in at least the last five years.

Jenny is upset because she's worked so hard helping Blair set up for the party, yet Blair didn't give her an invite. She complains to Vanessa about this, and Vanessa swings into Fairy Godmother mode, helping Jenny find a dress and a mask and sneaking her into the ball. Dan swings into Knight in Shining Armor mode, and decides to attend the ball sans invite to sweep Serena off her feet. He cancels the movie plans he had with Vanessa. Of course this all results in Dan and Serena kissing at the masquerade ball as Vanessa stands three feet away, furious.

Serena retreats to the bathroom as Dan talks things over with Vanessa. There, she runs into Jenny, and they end up switching masks and jackets. Since they're both wearing yellow dresses with long blonde hair, Jenny now looks like Serena. As Jenny exits the bathroom, Nate grabs her from behind and whispers in her ear that he can never love Blair and that he's obsessed with her. He then moves to kiss Serena/Jenny, who runs away. In the end, Nate doesn't find Blair in time and doesn't get laid -- which pisses of Blair, even though this is probably just as well for all parties involved.

Oh, and Dan's dad kisses Serena's mom in this episode, which is all very boring, except that America's Next Top Model winner Caridee English makes a little cameo as the much-younger girlfriend of Lily's ex-beau.
