American Gladiators: And a Winner Goes Home
The Cast of NBC's 'American Gladiators' -
NBC
This week's episode of American Gladiators took on a more desperate hue. For the first time, a winner would reach the end of the road. Was it one of Monday night's winners or was it Adonis or Venus, the winners who have been on the bubble? With six preliminary rounds with two winners each, and only eight spots in the next round, four contenders will beat their opponents only to go home themselves. Evan, a retail manager who also teaches rock climbing, competed against Son, a California Firefighter, on the men's side, while Christine, a mortgage broker, competed against Jen, an attorney who plays tackle football in the Independent Women's Football League, on the women's side. The hit of the night happened during The Pyramid. Evan was being stalked by Wolf while Son was up against Justice. Both men were being thrown around like rag dolls and time was running out. Evan had one last chance to reach the top and it looked like he'd gotten away from Wolf. But out of nowhere, Wolf came flying into camera range and tackled poor Evan. Good thing the Pyramid is made of foam because that hit looked like it would have hurt...badly. Things got a little touchy on the women's side, too. During Earthquake, Crush knocked Jen off the platform, but Jen was holding on. Crush tried to pry her fingers off to no avail. It was quite obvious to the viewers that Crush then aimed a vicious kick at Jen's head to get her to let go, but the referee didn't immediately rule on it. Jen was ticked off and let us know that kicking was against the rules. She was later awarded five points because the officials said that she'd have gotten a draw had Crush not kicked her. We were also treated to the sight of not one, but two Gladiators being catapulted into the water during The Assault. Jen and Evan both got lucky at station two and sent Siren and Militia, respectively, flying backwards. Maybe I'm jaded now, but neither was as awesome as Hellga's dunk from last week. In The Eliminator, Evan had a nine second head start on Son. He didn't need it at all. He flew through the course with no problems at all, while Son had problems starting at the cargo net. Evan's time was 1:29, a new record! He has guaranteed himself a spot in the final eight, and he sent Adonis home. For the women, Jen had a two-and-a-half second head start on Christine, but said that she was feeling ill from all the dunks. Hulk basically told her to suck it up. Christine caught up with her at the cargo net, but lost a shoe. Instead of putting it back on, she took the other one off and ran the rest of the race shoeless. It didn't seem to hurt her at all until it came to the dreaded Travelator. That thing kicked both the women's butts. Jen finally finished with a time of 4:07, good enough for the win, but not good enough to advance to the next round. Next week's episode of American Gladiators is the last preliminary round. Moli, with a time of 3:13, and Venus, with a time of 3:47 are on the bubble. Will their times hold up or will they be sent home? We'll just have to wait and see.
