What2Watch: Dancing With One Star

So You Think You Can Dance celebrates its one hundredth episode on Thursday (Fox, 9 p.m.), not bad for a star-free summer diversion. But the show is going with a high-wattage celeb to commemorate the big day, as Katie Holmes drops by as part of a tribute to Judy Garland. Holmes has never been known for her dancing, and her biggest acting news lately came from not appearing in The Dark Knight, so I imagine there will be as many tuned in expecting a trainwreck as there are people who are genuinely curious about how well she will do. Disasters really aren't part of the mix on SYTYCD, since everybody who makes it past the first audition has obvious ability. In my second season of careful viewing of the show, I still can't tell who has done well and who has struggled until I hear the applause level. But based on audience and judges' reactions and my own flawed observations, it's beginning to look like 1) my preseason pick Kayla still has a chance, but not a great one; 2) Jeanine may be the new favorite; 3) Evan is America's short sweetheart; and 4) Janette could win if enough viewers think she's Cheryl Burke of Dancing With the Stars fame. Man, do they look alike. Also this week: Monday: Dating in the Dark (ABC, 10 p.m.): The latest new idea: put several singles in a house for a few days, and let them interact in a pitch-dark room, which theoretically allows them to get to know each other on a deep, non-physical level before the lights come on. In the pilot, the singles work with a sketch artist to envision what their new hidden love interests look like. Rossi Moreale hosts. Tuesday: Hell's Kitchen (Fox, 8 p.m.): A mere two months after Danny took home the crown, Gordon Ramsay welcomes a new, terrified class of sixteen wannabes, with the grand prize a job running the kitchen at a resort in British Columbia. Season Six begins with the traditional "signature dish" and "first serving" vignettes, which always provoke classic Ramsay rants. Don't burn the risotto! Wednesday: America's Got Talent (NBC, 9 p.m.): Every year I forget how long the audition phase of this show drags on, but there it is atop the Nielsens again every week, so someone out there must be digging it. But the auditions finally end with this hour, so if there's a Susan Boyle in the bunch (that woman with the cleft palate we saw last week is nowhere near good enough to qualify), they had better make themselves known fast. Friday: Mental (Fox, 9 p.m.): Veteran tough guy Steven Bauer plays Arturo's father, who believes that playing a doctor on a soap gives him real life medical expertise. Also, Jack uses his trademark alternative style to coax information from an autistic teenage girl who was the only witness to the murder of her drug dealer father. Saturday: Malibu Shark Attack (Syfy, 9 p.m.): Having seen some of the folks who live in Malibu, I'm not sure this truly qualifies as a "horror" movie. A tsunami strikes the California coast, bringing with it a previously lost species of shark. Peta Wilson, who is probably changing agents as I type this, is the star. Sunday: Daisy of Love (VH1, 9 p.m.): Here's the winner of this summer's "This is still on?" award is the latest VH1 dating series, which proved (along with Real Chance of Love) that the formula might be starting to wane at last. Daisy will pick a winner this week, and then presumably begin casting the second edition on Monday morning. Most Popular Stories
