What2Watch: A New Dance Champion
Also: Monk returns, Rivers is roasted, and Jon & Kate minus each other.
Top 4 contestants Kayla Radomski, Brandon Bryant, Jeanine Mason and Evan Kasprzak on 'So You Think You Can Dance' -
FOX
The bad news for fans of So You Think You Can Dance is that we have already reached the end of the fifth season. But the great news is that the hiatus between seasons will be measured in weeks rather than months, since the show has been added to the Fox fall schedule. The final performance episode airs Wednesday (Fox, 9 p.m.), with the results coming the following night. How does everyone stand going into the final week? It looks very much like a season for the ladies; I would be startled if Jeanine or Kayla did not win. Kayla's big strength, other than being my pre-Top Twenty pick, is that she just has the feel of a star. But while Jeanine may not have as much pizzazz, she probably has more versatility and has come across as the judges' favorite. As for Brandon and Evan...well, it's just not a year for the boys, although since a huge part of the audience primarily watches for the male dancers, you can't totally write them off. But I'll root for Kayla and be insufferable in victory if she can pull it out. Also this week: Monday: Jon & Kate Plus 8 (TLC, 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) : Hey, this series hasn't been on in a while. Anybody know what these two have been up to in the last few weeks? This marks the official debut of the new format, which will feature separate interviews and separate interaction with the children. Kate goes to the beach with her brood and holds an outdoor campout, while Jon does whatever he's doing these days...beer bongs at a freshman mixer, maybe. Tuesday: Paris Hilton's My New BFF (MTV, 10 p.m.): It's hard to imagine any human activity more demeaning than appearing as a contestant on this show, which ends tonight, and will no doubt be revived after Paris contrives a fight with whoever the "winner" is. The finalists are Tiniecia and Stefanie, and if Paris ever sees either of them again after Labor Day, I'll be shocked. Thursday: Big Brother 11 (CBS, 8 p.m.): The fourth player will be evicted, leaving us with the nine who will comprise the eventual finalists and jurors. I used to complain that reality shows didn't cast enough people from my home state, but after watching Ronnie for the last month, all I can say is that I hope America doesn't think we're all like him. Friday: Monk (USA, 9 p.m.): The series that provided the template for virtually every other USA offering to follow begins its final season, with Monk taking on what at first appears to be a dream job: acting as bodyguard for a former child star (Elizabeth Perkins) who received death threats after writing a scandalous book. But Monk is dismayed to find out the actress isn't the sweetheart she appeared to be on screen. Saturday: George Lopez: Tall, Dark & Chicano (HBO, 10 p.m.): The comedian performs live from San Antonio for his second HBO special, which will likely cover his preferred subject matter of family life and the state of Mexican-Americans in the U.S. Lopez is joining the late night talk wars later this year, and while the competition is heavy, he certainly has a chance to make it. Sunday: Roast of Joan Rivers (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.): Kathy Griffin serves as the emcee for this salute to the comedic queen of mean -- hopefully she will take as well as she has always given. Jeffrey Ross, Gilbert Gottfried, and Lily Tomlin will help deliver the daggers. A roast is a name for a hunk of well-cooked meat, which is a good description of Rivers's face at this point.
