Synopsis:
Miniseries about the Salem witch trials of 1692 in which 19 convicted "witches" were hanged and many other suspects were imprisoned. Characters include: Reverend Samuel Parris and William Stoughton, two male leaders who begin the ruthless witch hunt; Ann Putnam, the wife of the influential Thomas Putnam, who is still mourning the death of her baby son when her young daughter Annie becomes one of the "possessed" village girls; Rebecca Nurse, a devout woman who gives Ann support after the loss of her child and who is denounced as a witch; Tituba Indian, a good-natured slave to the Parris family and one of the first three women to be accused of witchcraft; Elizabeth Parris, the strong-willed though sickly wife of Reverend Parris, who leaves town with their seemingly afflicted daughter in an effort to protect the child from being put on display by her witch-obsessed father; and Sir William Phipps, an independent thinker who tolerates the witch trials until his wife is accused as a witch.
