Charlie Toft used to win awards for book criticism, but decided that reading was too much work. As a TV writer, his specialty is an encyclopedic and possibly unhealthy knowledge of American Idol.

NeNe Leakes Lands A Gig at Glee

So much for the promise that Glee was finished with the stunt casting. With ratings and buzz continuing to slide, the show is now stunt casting with people who aren’t actors.

On Monday’s Watch What Happens Live, guests and Glee cast members Chris Colfer and Lea Michele announced that one of Bravo’s key personalities, NeNe Leakes of Real Housewives of Atlanta, is joining the show in a recurring role. She will play the McKinley High swim coach, and will apparently be a rival of Jane Lynch’s character, Sue Sylvester. (Er, has there been ANY reference in three seasons to McKinley having a swim team?)

It’s hard to understand the thinking here. Leakes isn’t an actor, the cast is already overstuffed, her real life celebrity will work to make Glee seem even more unrealistic than it already is, and it doesn’t appear that her character will have much to do with the singers and dancers that the show is allegedly about. Despite Lynch’s awesome skills, Sue was already in danger of becoming irrelevant to the show; giving her another rival won’t make her any more relevant.

Prediction: NeNe’s Bravo job has more long term potential than her Fox job.
