Remaking old TV shows is the hot new trend this year. The new versions of Knight Rider and 90210 have already been picked up for full seasons, and recently it was revealed that the CW is pursuing a similar reboot of Melrose Place. It's a smart move for two reasons. First, no one has to come up with an original idea because the blueprint for a new series is already in place. Second, and most importantly, the show has a guaranteed fan base. The CW received more press than normal for 90210 because so many people look fondly back on the original. With that in mind, I'm happy to offer five fresh reimagined TV shows for the CW. So many classic shows feature teenagers or can be changed so that they appeal to a younger demographic, which is exactly what the CW needs. My So-Called LifeNearly 15 years later, teenage angst is still around and teen girls struggle with fitting in. It's time to revisit that awkward period with a new girl shedding her old life to become accepted by the cool kids. Always helping out is Vice Principal Brian Krakow, who does his best to convince the troubled star of the show to focus on what's inside, hoping she'll date the nerdy best friend. Sadly, she only has eyes for the sullen, illiterate son of famous rock star Jordan Catalano, who is always on tour, leaving his teenage son angry and alone. MacGyverThe idea to remake MacGyver isn't original. Back In 2003, the WB was prepared to launch Young MacGyver, a new version of the series starring Jared Padalecki as the nephew of the original. Luckily for Padalecki, the show died before it was born and he was freed up to jump over to Supernatural, but now a cool, hip kid who helps people by putting together elaborate traps with everyday household objects is begging to be made. Much like with Knight Rider and David Hasselhoff, it shouldn't be too hard to convince Richard Dean Anderson to stop by for a brief cameo. Bosom BuddiesThe CW always needs some light, fun shows, and there's no better premise than two guys posing as women to move into an apartment. The comic misunderstandings and sexual tension between the men and the women would heat up, and the show could easily be transformed from a traditional sitcom into more of a sexy, fun dramedy. It might seem a bit silly, but that's why you'd need a showrunner like Ryan Murphy from Nip/Tuck, who knows how to make campy situations fun to watch. Tom Hanks is probably busy, but I'm sure Peter Scolari would gladly don a wig and dress once again as the oddly mannish landlord. Party of FiveThe greatest show about a clan of orphans is perfect for a return. Most teen shows barely mention the parents anyway, so why not cut out the middle man and show a family of five kids raising themselves after the horrific accidental death of their parents. Matthew Fox might be a little busy on Lost, but stars like Scott Wolf and Lacey Chabert could easily stop by for a very special guest appearance. Murder, She WroteYou might think a show about a senior citizen author and amateur detective won't appeal to a young audience, but wait until you meet Frank Fletcher, the great-nephew of Jessica Fletcher. After his parents move back to Cabot Cove, Maine, Frank has trouble fitting in, but his cleverness makes him an invaluable resource in helping other kids with their problems. Think of it as Veronica Mars for boys set in Maine. And for some respectability (and a possible Emmy nomination), Angela Lansbury could always stop by to lend a hand.
