Melrose Place: Then and Now
Can a new wave of stars make the same splash as Heather Locklear and friends?
Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is Violet on the new 'Melrose Place' on the CW -
The CW
Was it just a decade ago that teens and twentysomethings faithfully tuned in to Fox each week to watch the latest scandal happening in the Spanish-style apartment complex that turned the trendy Melrose Place into the place to be? We aren't quite as eager to embrace Jessica Simpson's little sister Ashlee in The CW's reboot, premiering at 9 p.m. Sept. 9. But another redhead, original bad girl Laura Leighton, is back to bridge the gap between old Melrose and new Melrose. Good old Sydney is now the apartment complex landlady who is collecting more than just rent from at least one of the handsome lads. And it's no coincidence that she's glommed on to hunky David (Shaun Sipos). He's the son of her former lover, Dr. Michael Mancini. Thomas Calabro, the only original regular cast member to stay for all seven seasons from 1992-99, returns as Mancini. Also reprising their roles from the show are Josie Bissett as Mancini's former wife, Jane, and Daphne Zuniga as the displaced New Yorker Jo Reynolds. So how do Melrose Place's new residents compare to our favorite 1990s gang? Let's take a look: Amanda/Ella: Heather Locklear jump-started Melrose Place when she hopped on board as the conniving advertising exec Amanda. Amanda appeared briefly in the first season, then took center stage as she romped through a succession of lovers. She made nasty into an art form. Cassidy plays high-powered publicist Ella, whose ambition knows no bounds. Sydney/Violet: Maybe it's just because they both have red hair, but there's something mighty similar about these two vixens. When Sydney first appeared on Melrose Place, she was slightly spoiled, but viewers soon realized she was rotten to the core. Now young, seemingly sweet Violet (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz) shows up at the apartment building just in time to discover a body floating in the pool. As Ashlee told reporters, "The really innocent girl is probably not so innocent. She's got a dark side." Jonah and Riley/Alison and Billy: Jonah (Michael Rady) is an aspiring film maker who just proposed to girlfriend Riley (Jessica Lucas), and she didn't exactly jump for the ring. Reminds us of the on-again, off-again relationship between Alison (Courtney Thorne-Smith) and Billy (Andrew Shue). They never did make it to the altar, and we're pretty sure the same will hold true for Jonah and Riley. David/Jake: Rebellious David (Sipos) dabbles in the wrong dating pool, and ends up getting burned. Jake (Grant Show), the bad boy all the girls loved, also had trouble in choosing the right girl. Kyle/Auggie: Kyle (Rob Estes) was a chef and restaurant owner who got caught up with the devious Amanda. Auggie (Colin Egglesfield) is the successful sous chef at the trendy restaurant Coal. Auggie gets caught up with the devious Sydney. Sydney/Sydney: Lauren Leighton plays the devilish Sydney, who seduces her way through almost every man on the show, and ends up getting killed in her wedding gown when she's hit by a car. In the first episode of this series, she's risen from the dead and back to her old tricks. Right up until the time she's found floating in the Melrose Place apartment building pool. The producers say she'll be seen in flashbacks, but we're wondering if there's yet more life in this feline. Most Popular Stories
