The AMC drama Mad Men has been renewed for a fourth season. The announcement comes three episodes into its third season, with the series appearing to be building in popularity. The season premiere garnered the show's highest ratings ever, with 4.5 million viewers tuned in.
The quick renewal marks a change from last year. The second season wrapped without a firm promise of return, due to contentious negotiations with showrunner Matthew Weiner which were not finalized until early this year. "With this early fourth season renewal, we're excited to let our audience know the captivating world of Sterling Cooper will be back on AMC again next year," said network president Charlie Collier.
Mad Men, which follows the employees of a Manhattan ad agency as they navigate the rough waters of the 1960s, won the Emmy for Best Drama following its debut season and is a favorite to repeat at the upcoming Emmy ceremony on September 20. The series received sixteen nominations in all, including nods for stars Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and John Slattery.
