What2Watch: Another Lost Physics Class
Also: A Numb3rs milestone, the Kentucky Derby, and a possible Chuck series finale.
Jeremy Davies as Daniel Faraday on 'Lost' ('Variations') -
ABC
Lost airs its 100th episode this Wednesday (ABC, 9 p.m) -- an impressive milestone for any show, and particularly for this one, which is complex in a way no other American series has ever been. Even though its most recent seasons have found it off the air for eight months at a time, and even though the average episode sends fans scurrying to physics textbooks to attempt to decipher what is going on, Lost remains a solid success. A key weakness of the series has been its difficulty in getting fans to accept new characters, but the latest episode is a nice showcase for two great newcomers: sardonic Miles (Ken Leung) and Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), who always seems about one post office away from committing mass murder. Faraday ends up revealing more about the unusual properties of the island, and will thus add further to the burgeoning mythology of Lost. What a relief -- I was so looking forward to another homework assignment. Also this week: Monday: Chuck (NBC, 8 p.m.): On another network and/or another time slot, Chuck might have become a success, but I fear this week's season finale is also the end of the line for the series. It's finally time for the wedding of Ellie and Captain Awesome, but the machinations of Fulcrum and Ted Roark (Chevy Chase) require Chuck (Zachary Levi) to cut out the bachelor party nonsense and get busy. Tuesday: Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment (Discovery, 10 p.m.): The new season of The Alaska Experiment is less PBS-y this time around, and more frankly adventurous. This week, the remaining trekkers have reached the stage of hunger where trying to nab a porcupine seems like a good idea. At least there are fewer people out there now to divide the supplies among. Thursday: Southland (NBC, 10 p.m.): It hasn't been an easy go for any new NBC series for the last couple of years, but early reaction to Southland appears positive. This week, Salinger worries when gang members steal his weapon after a traffic accident, and Adams is startled when a man exposes himself to her. Friday: Numb3rs (CBS, 10 p.m.): This reliable performer also commemorates its 100th 3pisode this week. With Don recovering from his stabbing, a downcast Charlie throws himself into an investigation of a previously unrecognized serial killer, and receives help along the way from a pair of amateur murder researchers. Saturday: Kentucky Derby (NBC, 4 p.m.): The real interest in the Run For The Roses comes after the race is over, as we hype the winner over the coming weeks and hope for a new Triple Crown, something no one under 30 has ever seen. I'm rooting for a colt called Mr. Hot Stuff, because I'm amused that someone would have thought to name a horse after me. Sunday: Keeping Up With the Kardashians (E!, 10 p.m.): We haven't had a good nude photo scandal on this show in a while. Pick up the pace, girls! This week, Khloe is asked to host a fashion show in New York, while Kim has to choose between her sweetheart Reggie Bush and her career. I think I speak for all Americans when I say "her career?"
