Paul McCartney made a successful return to Ed Sullivan Theater, 45 years after The Beatles began the British Invasion there. He sat down with Dave Letterman to answer questions, some expected, others less so.
Paul ruminated on The Beatles' famed Ed Sullivan Show appearance ("I was nervous"), on the 'Paul is Dead' rumors ("that was weird"), and on his relationship with Michael Jackson (summation: it was a pleasure until it became business).
Then Dave asked him if he'd ever played on a marquee before, and Paul answered, "Well, I've played on a roof before." Dave seemed to miss the reference. What a treat, then, to have him play "Get Back," both for its obvious connection to Macca coming back to the theater, but also because The Beatles famously rehearsed that song on the rooftop of their studio, which was captured so wonderfully in the Let it Be film. Paul then played "Sing the Changes" from his latest The Fireman album Electric Arguments. After Dave said goodnight, Macca treated the crowd to a string of greatest hits, which included "Band on the Run", "Helter Skelter", "Back in the USSR", "Coming Up" and "Let Me Roll It" (links are to video -- most are embedded below).
