What2Watch: Nightmares On Restaurant Row
Gordon Ramsay trains his fire on the pros this time.
FOX
The upcoming fall television season will feature several new shows based on concepts previously tried out in other countries. One such show coming back for a second season is Kitchen Nightmares, the British version of which became a hit thanks to the presence of the caustic Gordon Ramsay. While viewers might feel a bit guilty watching Ramsay verbally flay inexperienced chefs on Hell's Kitchen, it's another thing entirely to see him going after restaurant owners who are failing to serve their staffs and their customers. We've all been in bad restaurants and wanted a Ramsay to speak, or scream, for us. Tonight's nightmare (Fox, 9 PM) is the Handlebar, a Long Island establishment that hasn't kept up with the times. The ambience is a good 25 years out of date (a problem even on Long Island), and the Handlebar's head chef is merely putting in time, seemingly uninterested in learning anything new. Can Ramsay get the restaurant's owners to make the needed changes? The stakes might seem small, since the loss of one restaurant isn't going to impact any of us one way or the other, but it's just fun to watch Ramsay explode. Big Brother 10 (CBS, 8 PM): The last eviction takes place tonight, and either Dan, Jerry, or Memphis will be left homeless...at least until the show wraps up next Tuesday. I guess Dan has turned out to be the season's protagonist almost by default, as Memphis isn't very interesting and Jerry takes himself and the game way too seriously. America's Got Talent (NBC, 8:30 PM): As much as I've chided NBC for the ridiculously slow pace of this show, it's beginning to seriously pick up now: the top ten will be announced tonight. Last night was noticeably better than Tuesday, so much so that Piers Morgan warned the adorable 4 year-old Kaitlyn that her time was probably up. Can I dare to dream? American Chopper (TLC, 9 PM): Orange County plays host to the RJR Memorial Car Show, an effort that has all the staffers seeking out help to make it a big day. I like it when my motorcycle builders are civic minded. 102 Minutes That Changed America (History, 9 PM): No major news events in history were as exhaustively documented in real time as the terror attacks that occurred on this date seven years ago. This documentary follows the time between the moment the first World Trade Center tower was hit till the time it collapsed, mostly using footage shot by amateurs. Burn Notice (USA, 10 PM): How many former spies are out there? Michael bumps into another one tonight, played by Tim Matheson, who has gone seriously bad and asks Michael to perform a murder for him. But Michael decides to turn the tables. There are very few upright tables in this guy's vicinity. Comics Without Borders (Showtime, 10 PM): This stand-up showcase will feature comedians from various ethnic groups, which sounds like it would have been a really hip idea in 1966. There's nothing wrong with the idea, I suppose, despite the horrifying visions of Yakov Smirnoff running through my head. Tonight's featured comics: Dean Edwards and Justin Worsham. Flashpoint (CBS, 10 PM): One thing that happens a lot on television but nowhere else is people taking hostages in a courtroom. I've been in courthouses, and I've noticed that if you have a weapon on you, it's probably going to be discovered at one of the jillions of levels of security. But TV writers keep going to that well, leading to hours like tonight's Flashpoint, where a young murder suspect takes over a courtroom. Glam God With Vivica A. Fox (VH1, 10 PM): Philip Bloch gives advice on what to do in the case of a fashion emergency, and giving the teams the assignment of preparing a celebutante for a night out in Hollywood. But what do you know: unprofessional behavior threatens the future of some of the stylists. Smash Lab (Discovery, 10 PM): The smashers end up inside a capsized boat. I can think of several other entire casts of TV shows I'd much rather see in this position. The goal: find a way out, either by going lower and trying to use a submarine, or going up and cutting through to the surface. Top Pop Group (MTV, 10 PM): This has been the year of hit-and-run talent competitions on MTV--quick, who won Rock the Cradle?--but the channel gives it another shot with this series that aims to find an unsigned vocal group that's both cute and talented. Good luck with that. Mario Lopez hosts because Joey Fatone is just plain worn out. The Cho Show (VH1, 11 PM): What do you do when stand-up has lost its thrill and blogging no longer satisfies one's creative urges? If you're Margaret Cho, you decide to record a pop single and make a sex tape. That's the reason I'm never going to stop blogging: I can't sing. Most Popular Stories
