Katie Couric Back On The Morning Shift
Charlie Toft March 29, 2012

Katie Couric’s time co-hosting Today coincided with the era when the NBC morning stalwart opened up what has proven to be a permanent ratings lead on ABC’s Good Morning America. But now that her upcoming syndicated talk show has been picked up primarily by ABC affiliates, Couric apparently feels it’s time to make amends.
The Perky One will spend next week co-hosting GMA with George Stephanopoulos. The announcement was made on Thursday morning’s GMA by Robin Roberts, whose upcoming vacation is making room for Couric. The first signal something might be up came on Tuesday, when Couric showed up on the Dancing With the Stars set without explanation.
The two morning shows traded periods of dominance for a couple of decades, but Today took a lead over GMA in 1995 that has never been interrupted, not even for a week. But GMA has been creeping up on Today of late, raising the possibility that Couric’s return to mornings might be the factor that finally ends the streak.
