In one of the more bizarre couplings of the decade, Miss Lovelorn 2009 — Jessica Simpson — has taken up with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.

Simpson, 29, has been spotted with Corgan, 42, in New York City. Apparently Corgan is a friend of the family, which always helps when it comes to winning over the meddlesome Papa Joe Simpson. You’ll recall Joe didn’t approve of his daughter’s ex-husband, Nick Lachey, and we all know how that ended.

But is Corgan the one to mend Simpson’s tender heart? She was dumped by Tony Romo the day before her birthday this year and a coyote took off with her beloved dog weeks later. She also had the misfortune to wander into the clutches of notorious ladies man John Mayer.
