Charlie Toft used to win awards for book criticism, but decided that reading was too much work. As a TV writer, his specialty is an encyclopedic and possibly unhealthy knowledge of American Idol.

Jane Lynch In Line To Host Emmys

Fox has the Emmy telecast this September, and may be looking towards a star from one of its biggest series as the host of the show.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Glee star Jane Lynch is the network’s top choice to host the annual salute to TV’s best, which will take place on September 18. Lynch would solve a problem for Fox, which doesn’t have any hit live action sitcoms or a late night show, traditional places for a network to find an Emmy host (Jimmy Fallon handled the duties last year on NBC). She has never hosted a big awards show, but has worked the Fox upfront presentation the last two years in character as Sue Sylvester.  She is a good enough all-around entertainer to handle a Neil Patrick Harris-like production number if need be. And it doesn’t hurt that she is among the most likely people at Fox to actually take home an Emmy herself (she is the reigning Best Supporting Actress).

Why not Ryan Seacrest for host, considering he emcees the biggest program on the network, American Idol, and hosted the Emmys when they were last on Fox in 2007? Deadline suggests that Fox might not want to irritate the folks behind The X Factor, which will debut within days of the Emmy telecast, by providing an Idol personality with a platform. And recall also that Seacrest was part of the disastrous all-reality host Emmys in 2008 – no one wants to let that genie out of the bottle again.
