Harry Morgan died at age 96 Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. Morgan may be best known for playing Colonel Sherman T. Potter in M*A*S*H. He played Colonel Potter with the perfect balance of gruffness and kindness during the hardships of war. On Dragnet, he played Officer Bill Gannon. He acted in over 100 films, including How the West Was Won as Ulysses S. Grant.

In 1980 he won a best supporting actor Emmy for his work as Colonel Potter. When asked how he felt about the end of the series, he replied with “sadness and an aching heart.” He is survived by three sons and his wife, Barbara.
