What2Watch: Katherine Heigl's Latest Emmy Bait

Also this week: HBO debuts a detective show, Motown on Idol, and the bad girls beat it.

Primetime always seems to have a designated diva, and over the last year that role has been filled nicely by Katherine Heigl, who never seems to be short of tart opinions regarding Grey's Anatomy castmates past and present, and the quality of Grey's scripts. One must admit that in the wake of Izzie's affair with a ghost, Heigl's criticisms looked sharper than ever.

But with a new storyline that has Izzie facing cancer, Heigl has a chance to shine in what just might be the beginning of her long-rumored departure for the world of bad romantic comedies. This week (ABC, Thursday 9 PM), Izzie undergoes surgery, while Derek (Patrick Dempsey) climbs back in the surgical saddle. And Owen's post-traumatic stress creates a serious new issue in his relationship with Cristina. Heigl may have a love/hate relationship with her show, but dying would be an excellent way to get another Emmy.

Also this week:

Monday: Gossip Girl (CW, 8 PM): Chuck and Serena grow worried about Blair's wild behavior. Huh? I thought wild behavior was what Gossip Girl basically celebrated every week. Also, Vanessa tries to get Nate to mend fences with his mother's family, and Lily and Rufus decide to come clean about past romances.

Tuesday: The Bad Girls Club (Oxygen, 10 PM): The latest season of utter lunacy ends with a dinner that is intended to send everyone home on a note of peaceful resolution, but things go wrong (shocker) when Amber M. offends Tiffany, and Sarah admits her indiscretion to Noah. Ah, a very special episode.

Wednesday: American Idol (Fox, 8 PM): A special night this week for the performance show. As if the continuing existence of Flo Rida didn't prove that the musical taste of the American people is nearing an alltime low, the final ten is now minus Alexis Grace. The only bonus is that several of those remaining could provide some comedy handling the music of Motown. Dancing in the street? Megan Joy can't even dance in place.

Friday: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox, 8 PM): I think it's time to start wondering if the producers have something in mind in the way of a resolution here, since the odds this series is returning don't look good. Tonight, Cameron shares a secret with Derek, Catherine deals with a new John Henry issue, and John goes into hiding in the care of Charley.

Sunday: The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (HBO, 8 PM): Based on the hit Alexander McCall Smith novels, this series is less edgy than the typical HBO Sunday fare. In the pilot, a newly divorced woman in Botswana named Precious Ramotswe (the singer Jill Scott) opens her agency and gets to work investigating a cheating husband. This was the final directing project for Anthony Minghella before his death a year ago.

Sunday: Celebrity Apprentice (NBC, 9 PM): Here's a reminder on how it is that Khloe Kardashian ended up on a "celebrity" show: she's famous for being the sister of someone who is famous for being the best friend of someone who is famous for...why is Paris Hilton famous again? This week, the people who are typically busy trashing hotel rooms are judged on how well they staff an elite hotel.
