Drop Dead Diva: Lost & Found

Episode 5 |  Season 1 2008 - 2009 |  First Aired: 8/09/2009
Synopsis:
Jane wakes up excited about working on a case for the first time with Deb’s former fiancé Grayson but finds out that she has been assigned to a pro bono case and Kim is taking her slot with Grayson. Jane then finds out that today is her birthday and that she is 32 years old (Deb was 24 when she passed away). Jane’s new client Michael Fernandez has her assistant Teri’s eye but Jane is less than excited to work with the wrongly-convicted man. Michael’s case strikes a nerve for Jane and she wants to help Michael make up for the lost time by taking the fight to the compensation board. Jane confronts Fred about the lost time but does not get a satisfactory answer. Meanwhile, in Kim and Grayson’s case, their client Barry Schuster defends his website that offers a service to help married people cheat and Kim and Grayson have to find a way to defend it. Jane gives Michael a minor makeover before his hearing. Stacy runs into Grayson at the office and discusses her new “friendship” with Jane. At the Fernandez hearing, Jane makes an impassioned, sympathetic plea to the board. At the office, Teri confronts Stacy about their mutual friend Jane, arguing that Jane does not like massages and prefers onion-based appetizers. Fred and Stacy decide to throw Jane a party. The compensation board denies the request and awards Fernandez nothing. Teri helps Jane deal with the loss but Jane is not in the mood for a pity party. The massage therapist tries to work on Jane’s back but she discovers that she is ticklish. Parker reads Jane the riot act for losing the case. In Kim and Grayson’s case, Kim cross-examines the plaintiff and tries to make the case that relationship problems led to the husband straying. Jane researches the Fernandez case and discovers that the real killer had been dead for years for while Fernandez was in prison. Jane and Grayson discuss their views on marriage as Grayson has a hard time with Kim’s disbelief in monogamy. Jane discusses the new revelations with District Attorney Callahan but comes up against the system. Parker agrees with the D.A., noting that an angry D.A. is bad for the firm. In Kim and Grayson’s case, the plaintiff’s attorney makes an ad hominem argument that could turn the jury against Kim, forcing Grayson to deliver the closing. In court, Jane turns the tables on the D.A., accusing him of negligence. Grayson delivers an honest but fair closing in his trial. The compensation board offers a $100,000 settlement and Mr. Fernandez accepts it, deciding that he wants to move on with his life. After winning his case, Barry Schuster asks Kim out to dinner but she declines it. At Jane’s surprise party, Jane sings Deb and Grayson’s favorite Jason Mraz song, jogging Grayson’s memory.
