Few in her sport ever won as often as Martina Navratilova, but now the tennis legend is the latest member of the Dancing With the Stars Loser’s Club. Navratilova was the first celebrity dancer ousted in Season 14.
Wednesday’s results factored in viewer votes and judges’ scores from the first two weeks of competition. Navratilova had fared worst with the judges so far, and despite her solid attitude and willingness to work, she never seemed comfortable with the glitz of DWTS (not that anyone could look good in red fringed pants and mesh over a bikini top), and didn’t seem able to pick up the steps at all.
Joining Navratilova in the bottom three were singer Gavin DeGraw and, in a mild surprise, lightfooted Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan, who tied Katherine Jenkins for the highest score on Monday. Fegan also danced first this week, which may have affected his vote totals – or perhaps DWTS simply wanted to portray him as being in trouble in order to boost his votes in future weeks.
The first results show of the season brought with it the re-introduction of the Troupe, which now features two new members, Henry and Emma. We’re not sure what happens to former Troupe dancers who don’t get called up to the big leagues; perhaps they get dumped onto the show that comes next on ABC, Body of Proof. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland talked up Duets, the ABC summer competition show she’s involved with; while Katie Couric was in the audience to remind everyone she exists.
Despite her competitiveness, Navratilova gave every impression of treating the show as a lark, and displayed no bitterness upon leaving. If anyone should feel dissed by the process, it’s her partner Tony Dovolani. Though he has never won, he frequently went deep into the season in his early days on the show, but hasn’t done better than sixth place since Season 8. Plus, DWTS still needs to make it up to him for Kate Gosselin.
