The Bachelorette’s Bentley: Bad Boys Bad Boys, Whatcha Gonna Do?
Pamela Sitt June 1, 2011

This season’s Bachelorette villain is SO bad, host Chris Harrison decided to spend an hour talking to reporters about the crazy enigma that is Bentley Williams. And of course, to tease next Monday’s episode as the MOST DRAMATIC ROSE CEREMONY EXIT by a bachelor, ever.
Apparently Bentley — who has already said on camera that he’s 1) not attracted to Ashley and 2) wishes she were Emily instead — gets even douchier on his way out the door.
“Everybody will be talking about this Tuesday morning!” –direct quote.

When did you start to realize how bad Bentley was?
I thought he was going to be trouble the moment Ashley told me he was going to be trouble. We talked that [first] night. I was pretty adamant about my feelings about him. When you have information before the guy ever gets out of the limo, that is beyond a red flag. And she never heeded any of the warning signs. We gave her the option to not even meet the guy. But she said no. She made the choice to go forward.
What is attracting Ashley to Bentley? What does she see in him?
I asked her what was it about this guy? And she never could really answer that. Was it the bad boy, was it I want to fix him … I don’t know. I found it very perplexing myself. What do you see in this guy? He’s bad news. He’s going to hurt you. But he was so smooth when he was around her. Eventually he was able to use that to crush her.
Do you think Ashley actually fell in love with Bentley?
I do think she was falling for him or in love with him. It happened fast. I don’t know why she fell so fast for that guy. I think if we’d stopped the show the moment the limos arrived, he would be the one. I don’t know if it was the forbidden fruit … she fell for the guy, hook, line and sinker.
Would you consider him the biggest villain the show’s ever had?
I think the villain thing is almost too cliche and soft. It’s almost like it’s a role he’s playing. It lets him off a little too easy. I don’t even know what his motivation was. I don’t know why he was treating her like that. I don’t get it. He is a father. He has a daughter. … Tuesday morning, there is not a person who will wake up and not have an opinion about Bentley. Everybody will be talking about this Tuesday morning.
Why not let her see [what he's saying] sooner so she can move on?
Maybe if this had gone any further … really, this is two weeks into it. Things had just started getting out of hand. If it had gone on longer, I don’t know if we would have just shown her these things. Some of the producers had told her this guy’s not good for you, and I had been saying that. She had more information than Ali and Jillian had about Justin and Wes.
Bentley made a comment about letting Ashley “tickle [his] pickle.” Did The Bachelorette go too far in airing that?
I think you have to air what the guy said. This is what the guy was saying about Ashley. I think you needed to see what this guy was about. … Pickles are 8 o’clock friendly.
Bentley said he was interested in Emily. Why bring him on to meet Ashley?
Even if it was Emily, there’s no guarantee he’s going to fall in love with her. He had just as much as an opportunity to fall for Ashley. And he didn’t say those things during casting. He didn’t say if it’s Ashley, I’m going to use her and destroy her.
Why cast him?
We are casting all the time, even when the show is filming. I don’t get involved in the casting, so I never saw his tapes.
Should we expect a villain each season?
No. People have said he’s a plant … but he’s just this guy. We didn’t put this guy in there. People give us way too much credit all the time. This really is not a good thing for Ashley or the show. We almost had to shut down production. It was really tough for her, and it was tough for us to get her back on track.
Bentley’s friends are blaming ABC for editing Bentley’s words together. How do you respond to that?
I’ve seen Monday’s [upcoming] episode. You’ll see him on camera saying these words, full sentences. You’ll see him. You can’t really take things he said out of context. The things he said really crossed the line of decency as far as I’m concerned. I would love to see what his friends have to say about the way he leaves the show. To me, the stunt he pulled is worse than anything he’s said before.
Does Bentley return before the final episode?
Ashley definitely has a hard time moving on after this. And it definitely will continue to haunt her and play a major role as we head to the finish. The only saving grace is that it did happen this early.
If Bentley wanted to be on Bachelor Pad, would ABC let him?
I have no idea. I have no control over the casting. Whether we have him on Bachelor Pad or not, really depends on what plays out in the next few weeks. I really want to talk to this guy because I can’t quite figure him out. I think it’s too easy to say he’s evil or he’s a jerk. I really hope he comes back to the Men Tell All.
