I get a lot of messages from eager Big Brother fans curious about the casting process and wondering how they can join this dysfunctional family.

To start off, I never tried out for Big Brother. Yes I'm one of "those" house guests. Big Brother found me and I believe it was because I had a "rival" and was originally cast to be on season eight with her. We ended up not making it on the show but got very far in the process. Big Brother called me back for season nine and the rest is history.

Big Brother is now searching for the cast of season 12 and since I have been through the process twice, I'm going to offer my advice for Big Brother hopefuls. I came up with five very important rules to follow:

Be yourself
Don't try to be someone you think the producers would like to see on the show, be exactly who you are. Don't get discouraged if you don't make it, they could always ask you back for the next season. That's what happened with me. This process can be very intimidating, but don't be embarrassed about who you are. The reason Big Brother is such a hit is the very diverse cast. The show wouldn't be fun if there were 14 identical house guests.

Don't hold back Before you make it to the finals, you fill out HUNDREDS of questions. Most likely your jaw will drop the first time you read some of these questions, but be very open and honest. Remember, these questions could be the deciding factor for becoming a finalist. One question that sticks out in my mind is: "Have you ever urinated in a sink?" Why on earth would someone need to know this? Well, questions like these are great because not only are you answering yes/no but you're telling the story of why you urinated in the sink or why you are absolutely appalled by the idea of urinating in a sink. Your character really comes out when you answer these types of questions, and that is why you need to be honest. Don't be afraid to tell your deepest and dirtiest secrets. Don't be embarrassed, they have heard it all. BUT if you make the show, just be aware that there is a live feed! Anything you say will be heard! Oh wait ... I work for RealNetworks; we love the unedited footage, why am I telling you this?

Stand out
There are THOUSANDS of people applying for Big Brother, why should you be the next house guest? What makes you stand out from these other interesting people? Maybe it's an appealing story from your past or present. Maybe it's something about your character. Whatever it is, find it and use it to your advantage. If you are submitting a video, you need to start off with a bang! You need to catch the viewers' attention in the first 10 seconds. Put your thinking cap on and get very creative with this, but remember to have fun! If you mess up, keep the blooper in or move it to the end of the video. Bloopers can be very amusing.

Have a game plan
The producers will ask you what your strategy is. Get creative with this! There are more than 100 Big Brother House Guests who have played their own game, so don't try to replicate someone else's game play.

Keep your mouth shut
Don't tell anyone that you are even part of this process, EVER! I get so many messages from people telling me that they have made finals and asking me what to do now. Part of the Big Brother excitement is the reveal of the house guests. It is very crucial that you keep your mouth shut!

I hope this advice helps! Best of luck and hopefully someday I can welcome you to this dysfunctional family we call Big Brother.
