New TV on DVD: Battlestar Galactica, Head Case, Barney Miller, Married With Children
Ali Wentworth's Head Case is worth a look on DVD, but the Battlestar Galactica universe is going wild this week.
'Head Case' Season 1 on DVD -

The most intriguing new release this week is Head Case: Season One ($19.97), but what's on everybody's mind is Battlestar Galactica, all the seasons, all the time. First, let's consider Head Case, starring Alexandra "Ali" Wentworth, a fascinating stealth celebrity who sort of flies in under the radar despite her often brief presence in many massive hits like Oprah, The Office, In Living Color, Jerry Maguire and Seinfeld -- she was Sheila in the "Soup Nazi" episode. (Incidentally, during my time at Entertainment Weekly, we felt that we were the ones who discovered the Soup Nazi -- that's what we called him when we got lunch there every day, before Seinfeld ever heard of him. Man, was he mad about Seinfeld -- "I am not a Nazi!" he'd shout, and throw you out of the line, as he did to Jerry when Jerry visited to apologize.) Wentworth is George Stephanopoulos's wife and Nancy Reagan's social secretary's daughter, so she's comfortable with celebs. She plays a not-shy, semi-crazy shrink who diagnoses the alleged mental kinks of guests like Seinfeld, Janeane Garofalo, Lea Thompson, Andy Dick, Rosanna Arquette, Ione Skye, Chrisopher Lloyd, Ahmet Zappa, Trudie Styler, and Jeff Goldblum. Ali's improv-ish show is worth a look. But as I say, what everybody's buying this week are Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.0 ($49.98), Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 ($59.98), Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.0 (Episodes 1-10) ($49.98), Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.5 (Episodes 11-20) ($49.98), and Battlestar Galactica: Season 1 ($59.98). Why? The season ender of a show so important to the non-Sci Fi wider world that the United Nations is presenting a panel on it. I don't care if you hate Sci Fi, you have to start watching this show. If you're tired of the rapidfire pace and technology or legal-process-obsessed style of today's dominant cop shows, slow down and get into the old-school groove of Barney Miller: The Complete Third Season ($29.95). These guys, each a well-crafted type, remind me of the real cops I hung out with at a cop shop in Milwaukee, only with much better material. The best of the Precinct 12 bunch joined up in the third season, Steve Landesberg as Dietrich, the deadpan smartypants detective always going mental mano-a-mano against Detective Harris (Ron Glass). But Dietrich wasn't half as deadpan as Jack Soo as Yemana (who died soon after this season). Married With Children: The Complete Tenth Season ($39.95) was kind of like a cross between its Fox teammate show The Simpsons and the also-wildly-popular Roseane, with a dash of Family Ties thrown in and all of Family Ties' earnestness thrown out. No very special episodes for this dysfunctional family! Al's snarling sneer, Peggy's bonbon-and-TV addiction, and daughter Kelly (Christina Applegate)'s dumber-than-Justine-Bateman's-Mallory antics age well. For a refreshingly distinctive military take on the TV crime show, try JAG (Judge Advocate General) ($55.98). The intricacies of the individual cases may hook you on the ongoing soap opera of the ongoing story line. Most Popular Stories
