What2Watch: A Transition Season For Top Model
How far can this year's conversation piece go?

As America's Next Top Model ages and becomes increasingly predictable, the series appears to be developing a signature style, singling out one of the contestants for speculation about whether she can fit into the established norm for working models. Last fall, it was Heather with her Asperger's; she became the clear fan favorite but was eliminated a step short of the finish line. In the spring cycle, there was curiosity about whether Whitney could become the first plus-sized model on ANTM to become a true contender, and lo and behold, she took the prize. So what surprises lie in store for the 11th cycle of the CW's flagship show, which begins with a two hour blowout tonight (CW, 8 PM)? Thirty models are summoned to the "Top Model Institute of Technology," where hopefully they were kept away from anything that might cause harm to themselves and others. Tyra Banks trims the thirty to fourteen, and the season is off to the races. And you may have heard just a little something about this season's conversation piece: we have a transgendered model named Isis in this year's cast, who will (this is an easy prediction) be kept around Heather-like long enough to generate more buzz, but doesn't have a snowball's chance of winning. Republican National Convention: John McCain will officially be nominated this evening, although you'll probably have to watch cable to catch that. Once the networks fade in (10 PM), the highlight will be the speech by vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who hasn't had much to say since last Friday. America's Got Talent (NBC, 8 PM): The last members of the Top 40 finally perform. I've been perversely looking forward to seeing Inndigo again, although I don't hold out much hope that they've learned how to sing. But at least they aren't adorable and four years old. Bones (Fox, 8 PM): The fourth season begins with the producers facing a key task: winning back the fans who were upset by the revelation that geeky Zack was actually the apprentice to a lunatic serial killer. Tonight, Bones and Booth get to work in London when the daughter of a rich American turns up dead (the pair are overseas to deliver lectures); while back in Washington, Angela deals with last-minute complications involving her estranged husband. Greatest American Dog (CBS, 8 PM): The final four compete in a challenge that tests endurance, and the injury that Galaxy suffered last week threatens her ability to continue. The good news for Galaxy is that all you have to do is throw her a tennis ball and she'll be totally over it. Ghost Hunters (SciFi, 9 PM): The team heads to a museum in Buffalo that was once a funeral home. Well, that's just a recipe for trouble right there. The museum may be haunted by the spirits of those whose unclaimed ashes were found. Project Runway (Bravo, 9 PM): The designers are judged this week by Diane von Furstenberg. The ratings for this season have been pretty good despite a cast which has bored most veteran fans to tears, and you have to think the parade of big name guests is the major reason. Still don't have a clue who the favorite might be, though. Destination Truth (SciFi, 10 PM): Ah, my most pleasurable of guilty pleasures is back. This show is so ridiculous it achieves perfection. Josh Gates visits an allegedly haunted mosque in Malaysia and heads to northern Australia in search of a Bigfoot-like creature called the Yowie. What else would the Aussies call it? Man vs. Wild (Discovery, 10 PM): Most people don't think of Ireland when the subject of raw nature comes up, but it's brutal there, man! I'm made of stern stuff! Bear deals with the inevitable endless rain and the steep cliffs of the west coast. He also enters a peat bog to fetch a dead sheep for food and ends up being bogged down. Man, no wonder they all starved. Sons of Anarchy (FX, 10 PM): This hasn't been the greatest of years for FX, but with The Shield back and this series starting up, things may be turning around. Like The Riches, Sons of Anarchy examines those involved in a subculture with a bad image: a biker club in northern California. The pilot finds our heroes, who call themselves Samcro, battling a rival club that gets into their arms warehouse; and the newborn son of one of the club's leaders faces a medical crisis. Top Design (Bravo, 10 PM): Bravo didn't have a good deal of success turning this show into one of its true hits, but perhaps a change of hosts will help: India Hicks checks in to replace Todd Oldham, who now serves as the show's Tim Gunn figure (sounds like a smart move). The first challenge: turn a loft space into something special, with a small budget and limited time. Most Popular Stories
