Why 30 Rock Shouldn't Win
Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin's awards dominance is starting to feel sillier than their show.

Check back every Wednesday for more from BuddyTV.com on the state of television and your favorite shows like 24, Grey's Anatomy, Lost and Gossip Girl. I love 30 Rock as much as everyone else. I think it's one of the funniest shows on TV and Tina Fey is easily one of the smartest, funniest and sexiest women around. However, lately I'm beginning to feel my love slipping. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show, which is great as ever. Instead, I'm growing frustrated with its awards show dominance. I enjoy diversity, and there are so many great shows and actors on television that it's a shame when one show hogs all of the awards. But that's exactly what's happening. In the last year, 30 Rock won Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys while stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey also won Emmys for Lead Actor and Lead Actress. Then at the Golden Globes a few weeks ago, the show, Baldwin and Fey all won again. Finally, at this week's Screen Actors Guild Awards, the show, Baldwin and Fey won yet again. It's an embarrassment of riches and it's reached the point where 30 Rock is expected to win. As I've said, this is a funny show, but there are a lot of funny shows on TV. The Big Bang Theory makes me laugh just as hard as 30 Rock, and star Jim Parsons gives, in my opinion, a much better and funnier performance than Alec Baldwin. Meanwhile, Steve Carell has yet to win an Emmy or a SAG Award for his role as Michael Scott on The Office, and he's only won one Golden Globe. For the women, Christina Applegate is a charming comedienne with expert timing on Samantha Who? while Mary-Louise Parker toils away on Weeds, and yet neither has been rewarded by the Emmys or SAG Awards. The fact is that there are plenty of great comedies on television, no matter what some people may tell you about the death of the sitcom. How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Chuck, Scrubs and Psych are just a few of the other funny comedies on TV that get routinely overlooked because 30 Rock is the "It" show. Hopefully, by the time the Emmys come around again, this tidal wave of adulation for 30 Rock will be over and the voters will be able to see that, as funny as it and its stars are, there is more to TV than just Tina Fey.
