20/20: Double Jeopardy/Live to Tell

Episode 26 |  Season 32 2008 - 2009 |  First Aired: 2/27/2009
Synopsis:
On a stormy night last September, two college best friends, Jordan Wells and Ashley Younger, survived a car crash only to have their Medivac helicopter crash into the woods of Maryland, killing all but one onboard. Plus: In February 2003, three American contractors conducting aerial surveillance for the U.S. Defense Department were taken hostage by rebels after their single engine plane crashed into the Colombian jungle. For more than five years, mission leader Keith Stansell, intelligence analyst Marc Gonsalves and Tom Howes, a career pilot, struggled to survive the extreme conditions subjected to death marches through the jungle, at times chained together and staving off starvation by eating everything from snakes to monkeys. Finally, in 2008, they were rescued in a daring operation straight out of the movies, all caught on tape. But, as Elizabeth Vargas reports, the men could lose more than time during their captivity would they also lose the women they loved? In conjunction with their new book, Out of Captivity: Surviving 1,967 Days in the Colombian Jungle, the three men speak candidly to Vargas about their harrowing ordeal.
