2010 Emmy Nominations: Trivia and Fun Facts
Pamela Sitt July 8, 2010

The Emmy nominations are out — and here’s the quick-hit take on what you need to know to sound knowledgeable at the watercooler this morning:
BY THE NUMBERS: HBO’s The Pacific led the race with 24 nominations, followed by a gleeful 19 for Fox’s breakout musical comedy, Glee. Emmy veteran Mad Men ruled the drama category with 17 nominations.
BETTY WHITE STRIKES AGAIN: She’s proven to be ratings gold, but is the 88-year-old also Emmy gold? She scored a nod for her guest hosting gig on Saturday Night Live; the late-night sketch series had 12 nominations total.
I’M WITH COCO: Conan O’Brien’s short-lived Tonight Show beat out Jay Leno and David Letterman for a nod in the comedy, variety or musical category, where he’ll go up against cable peers like The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Looks like cable, where Coco is headed next on TBS, is where it’s at.
FRIDAY NIGHT LOVE: The critically acclaimed and previously overlooked Friday Night Lights finally made it onto Emmy’s radar with two welcome acting nominations for leads Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. Here’s hoping next season, reported to be its last, will get even more Emmy love.
SORRRY, CHARLIE: After four years in a row in the Best Comedic Actor category, Charlie Sheen’s offscreen antics finally seem to have caught up with him. Apparently, the Academy doesn’t find domestic abuse all that funny, either.
NEW TO THE PARTY: It’s a surprisingly good year for freshman shows, as Emmy welcomed Glee, Modern Family and The Good Wife into the fold.
LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: Lost goes out with 12 nominations, including a notable first best actor nod for Matthew Fox.
SNUBBED!: It’s a strong season for comedy, but old favorites 30 Rock and The Office were ushered in over more deserving sitcoms like Community, Parks and Rec, and The Big Bang Theory. Quipped Community star Joel McHale after he helped make the nomination announcement: “It’s ok. I phone it in.”
REALITY BITES: Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains was well-received by fans, but snubbed by Emmy in favor of reality show standbys like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and perpetual winner The Amazing Race.
