Move over, Susan Boyle. In the ever-fickle world of online celebrity, a new YouTube singing sensation is taking the Internet by storm — and he’s only 12 years old.
Shaheen Jarfargholi, a schoolboy from Wales, won over a skeptical Simon Cowell during his audition on the British reality competition series Britain’s Got Talent. After energizing the audience by belting out his favorite song, “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse, he was stopped by Cowell and chastised for being a one-hit wonder. Then he was granted a chance to sing a second song.
“I was kind of nervous taking in the fact that I was stopped. I thought I’d blown it,” the youngster told a British TV station. He was accompanied to the audition by his single mom. The family cat stayed at home.
His follow-up song, Michael Jackson’s “Who’s Loving You,” blew away the judges — even Cowell. “This is how one song can change your life,” Cowell told him. “This could be the start of something special for you, young man.”
