Editor's Note: While we work on our play by play of the Seattle International Film Festival's opening night please enjoy our feature review of the opening night film: Battle in Seattle.

Walking into a film with no buzz on it is a particularly worrisome thing. When I first read about Battle In Seattle in the online guide, I’ll admit, I yawned. Great, I thought, another version of Crash or Bobby with an overly political message to be rammed down my throat. But man, look at that cast. Charlize…

As a boy growing up in Olive Branch, Mississippi I never imagined there was a place that felt the same way I did about film. Sure, I had inclinations that there were pockets out there that shared a similar love. For instance, I took in a grand showing of Gone With the Wind (complete with intermissions!) in Memphis, TN. However, I never put together that a whole city of people who absolutely adored cinema might exist somewhere out there. Websites weren't even invented yet. So if I could go back…

On rare occasions in this business you get handed a direct-to-video film that exceeds your every expectation. It breaks the mold of convention and clearly found itself abandoned by the studios because they just didn't get it. Whether ahead of its time, too extreme for even the most bloodthirsty of houses or just mistakenly falling through the cracks unnoticed by most, these films are the reason us cinephiles sift through stacks and stacks of unwatchable crap. We hope to find that rare, elusive…

Usually, when a critic receives a screener for a film prior to theatrical release, the DVD comes with a long list of restrictions. The distribution company maintains an extensive database of who's received it and when, often by serial number, just so someone's legally liable in case pirated copies makes it onto the black market. The DVDs themselves are usually imprinted with warnings that the company has the right to request its return at any whim. Being the responsible reviewers that we are,…

One of my very favorite undistributed films of the year, Murder Party, indeed found a distributor with my new hero Magnolia Pictures. Released as the freshman title of the new brand, Magnet Films, this charming little indie hits stores this week and folks can take a gander at it for the first time without having to run on the festival circuit to catch it.

Murder Party is the story of a social misfit who finds an invitation on the ground to a Halloween party, and having nothing better to do,…
