Woodstock’s 20 Most Essential Albums

|The Incredible Sting Band, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
In 1968, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter became ISB's most celebrated album after reaching No. 5 on the UK Charts and winning a Grammy in the States. Weaving ideas from such exotic locales as the Bahamas and India into alternately simple and trippily complex songs, Williamson and Heron basically wrote the book on wild hippie experimentalism. Minotaurs, the secret life of amoebas and vegetarianism (X-treme in 1968) are addressed with the fearless duo’s usual whimsy and creative unprofessionalism. Hangman remains ISB's best record, marked by the ecstatic "A Very Cellular Song." - Mike McGuirk
