Woodstock’s 20 Most Essential Albums

|Richie Havens made a name for himself when he opened 1969’s Woodstock Music & Art Fair. There, in front of 200,000 hippies, he soaked his robes in sweat while chanting the word “freedom” until he nearly passed out. Now interestingly enough, Havens’ studio albums aren’t nearly as ecstatic. 1970’s Stonehenge, for example, is a pretty collection of dreamy folk and pop balladry greatly inspired by the late Fred Neil. Half the tunes even boast orchestral arrangements that are both sweeping and lush. - Justin Farrar
