Joan Baez, One Day At A Time
The poster child for folk purity, Baez the artist was always more adventurous than her liberal-puritan politics suggested. Not only does One Day at a Time find the singer exploring groovy country-rock, but she’s actually covering the likes of Willie Nelson (the title track), Steve Young ("Seven Bridges Road") and Merle Haggard ("Sing Me Back Home"). These are "down home" songwriters you'd never associate with such a Yankee, yet she makes their tunes completely her own. Bravo, Ms. Baez. - Justin Farrar
