Tangled Up in Hues: Excellence in Rock Portraiture

|Music From Big Pink. Band, The (American/Canadian. Active 1967-1976, 1983-1999.) Credit the colorful calamity depicted on the cover of the Band's brilliant home-record debut to Bob Dylan, who painted it with confident, freewheeling brushstrokes that show his attention to German expressionists, especially Kirchner and Max Beckmann. The six playful human figures with musical instruments are rendered in bright colors and bold contours, a likely representation of the five members of the ensemble and Dylan himself. Perhaps the most literal of Dylan's works as a visual artist, an elephant stands just shy from the middle of the room.
