|Dexter Gordon, A Swingin' Affair
Dexter Gordon spent much of the 1950s behind bars in America because of drug issues. Then, the tenor sax titan moved to Europe for most of the '60s and cut a slew of the greatest bop platters ever recorded. Joining Gordon are pianist Sonny Clark, drummer Billy Higgins, and bassist Butch Warren -- the band's searing ballad tour of "Don't Explain" alone would make this essential. The other five tunes are just as good -- they were such a hot group that they laid down the tracks for Go on the same night.
