The Cooperberg family waits in a hospital waiting room to hear the results of the father's operation. The family is quite dysfunctional: Eli is a failed writer and husband, Susan a neurotic and unsuccessful artist and Edward a successful but still neurotic playwright. As the family bicker and bond, Eli's ex-wife and Edward's wife show up to add to the confusion, and a TV repairman observes the chaos.
