As a teenager Xiu Xiu is pulled from school and "sent down" to the remote countryside of Tibet to learn horsetrading and perform manual labor. Falsely promised the chance to lead her own female cavalry unit, Xiu Xiu learns that she has been lied to by her teacher Lao Jin and soon fears that she will spend the rest of her life as his slave. After sleeping with many men who use her, she comes to the realization that Lao Jin is the only man who truly loves her.
