Wondercon 2012 Preview

This weekend, for the first time ever, Wondercon, the awesomely fun and a little bit more relaxed little brother of Comic-Con, comes to Anaheim for the first (and hopefully only) time ever. Normally held in San Francisco, the convention had to head down the California coastline when they found out the Moscone Center was undergoing construction. I attended D23 at the Anaheim Convention Center in August and hated it to my very core, but if anyone can turn me around on Anaheim, it’s Wondercon. And it cannot be denied – a huge plus of having this major Con 45 minutes outside of LA instead of 8 hours, is that LA residents can easily decide to attend last minute, for one day or for all three days, without worrying about a hotel. So we decided to give you guys a preview of the convention, and hopefully help you so-cal residents decide what to do with your St Patrick’s Day weekend. As this is a Film/TV site, we’ll be focused mostly on our top Film/TV related panels, with a few extra fun suggestions. Panels in green are the ones I will be attending and most of which, I will be live tweeting at Twitter.com/loquaciousmuse. Stay tuned here at Film.com for a wrap up of the event on Monday.

The fact that it is 5 miles from the Convention Center says everything that needs saying about Anaheim. But the party, being held the night before the Con officially gets started, sounds like a blast, with food, drinks, special guests, and getting to play in the Science Center after hours.

3:30-4:30 Making Animation History with The Last Unicorn The classic 1982 animated fantasy is literally being pulled apart and remade on a frame-by-frame basis, using groundbreaking techniques and technologies to upgrade the look and feel of the film. This new enhanced/extended version will premiere theatrically in both 2D and 3D in 2014. Learn what’s being done from creators Peter S. Beagle (novelist and screenwriter), Connor Cochran (director), and Terri Kempton and Suren M. Seron (co-producers). Room 208
3:45-4:00 21 Jump Street The action-comedy 21 Jump Street opens today, and Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are taking a break from their beat to pay WonderCon a visit! In the action-comedy 21 Jump Street, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department’s secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover. Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn’t address in their own teen years—and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they left behind. In the film, Superman’s effectiveness as a superhero comes into question when a new group of super-powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As superheroes, the Elite know no bounds and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical, preferably nonlethal Man of Steel. The voice cast is led by George Newbern (Father of the Bride), reprising his Justice League/Justice League Unlimited role as Superman, NCIS star Pauley Perrette as Lois Lane, and versatile voice actor Robin Atkin Downes (Batman: Year One, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Manchester Black, the leader of The Elite. Award-winning comics writer Joe Kelly has adapted his original story from the heralded Action Comics #775 (“What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way”) into a script directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold) and executive produced by Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One).
