Maurice, a chubby but muscular 18-year-old black youth, has been pushed into professional boxing by his crippled father, a former champ. However, his true dream is to become a violinist, much to his father's chagrin. Maurice's life becomes a series of complicated messes as he tries to satisfy his father's need to see him in a more "masculine" profession.
