synopsis
While the Supreme Court's historic ruling in the Brown v. Board of Education case struck down the concept of separate but equal as it had been used to justify segregation in American schools, it did not end discrimination. Documentary looks at how many school districts continued to underfinance schools in towns and neighborhoods with large African-American populations, perpetuating a two-tiered system of education. Film illustrates this history of discrimination via a series of dramatic readings of important documents and speeches in the case, performed by celebrities--Alicia Keys, Mekhi Phifer, Joe Morton, Terry Kinney and Larenz Tate. Newsreel clips are also used to illustrate the historical background from initial complaints filed in Virginia and South Carolina to Thurgood Marshall's argument before the Supreme Court.
